Last night, I attended the preview of the new film, The Alto Knights, which starts Robert DeNiro in a dual role as Frank Costello and Vito Genovese. The movie has already generated considerable buzz among critics and audiences alike. Starring the legendary Robert DeNiro in a remarkable dual role, he was a dead ringer for both characters thanks to the artful use of makeup and costuming. The movie delves deep into the intricacies of the tumultuous friendship between Costello and Genovese. Throughout its two-hour runtime, the film effectively portrays not only the bond that develops between the two men, filled with loyalty and shared ambition, but also the ultimate dissolution of their relationship as external pressures and personal ambitions create an insurmountable rift. The story gives new meaning to the old saying, “Only your friends can hurt you,” in the mob world.
After the screening, I shared a bite to eat at the after-party with the screenwriter Nick Pileggi and his cousin famed author Gay Talese. It was Nick who encouraged me to write about Costello and Genovese, and he used the books in his research for the film.
I recommend this movie for true crime fans; it’s a classic organized crime story. If you want to learn more about Genovese and Costello, I encourage you to dive into my books. They offer in-depth insights and mob history that you won’t want to miss.
