Witness to a Summer of Reckoning

It’s been a busy summer with the conviction and sentencing of Gilgo Beach serial killer Rex Heuermann. After years of unanswered questions, stalled leads, and families waiting in quiet pain, the Gilgo Beach murders finally reached a conclusion in a Long Island courtroom. I was in court for both Heuermann’s guilty plea and, later, for the sentencing.

Heuermann admitted to killing eight women. Even as he said it, many in the room, including investigators and families, felt that the real number might never be known. The Gilgo case has always felt incomplete.

In the courtroom grief, anger, exhaustion, and long-awaited truth all came together. Family members stood and spoke directly to the man who had taken so much from them. Their voices showed years of pain. Prodded by the judge, he finally said he was sorry.

Heuermann is now in Dannemora State Prison where he will spend the rest of his life. For the families, life will never be the same. For the women who lost their lives, their families hope their names will be remembered.

Some people think there may be more victims still to be found. Only time will tell if the investigation finds more answers. For now, this summer was when the long shadow over Gilgo Beach finally faced the full force of the law.
